Prepaid cellular phones, unlike their more conventional counterparts, do not require a commitment to a monthly service plan. Instead, users prepay for air time much as they might buy long-distance phone cards. Prepaid cell phones are of substantial interest to users who might like to have a cellular phone for occasional use--for unexpected roadside emergencies, for example. But if you just want to have a cell phone as "insurance," it can be irritating to pay a conventional cellular telephone bill of $40 or $50 a month, month after month. For this type of user, prepaid cell phones may seem quite attractive.

Teens are a classic market for the prepaid cellphones. I was recently talking to a mom who was so upset when she got her cellphone bill and found her child had run up $450 in overages in just one month with an add-a-phone plan. A prepaid phone is a solution to that problem: It puts an absolute limit on how much you can talk.

I rarely ever talk on the phone, so my needs are minimum. I wanted the security of being able to call someone for directions, or in case my car broke down, or just simply to let my wife know "where I was". I chose the cheapest prepaid plan I could find. I wanted a years worth of service but I had no real plan to use it, except in those rare occasions. Wireless For Less than $9 a Month (Go to Tracfone)

User comment:

For $185 total I have 17 months of service for less than $11 per month. Included with this is a little more than 75 minutes per month if you average it out. I rarely use more than that.

The cheapest monthly plans by the big boys are $30. They would have charged me $510 for 17 months PLUS all those little taxes that jack your monthly bill up higher. And I would have gotten a lot fewer minutes.

Buy a 1 Year Card and get 50 bonus minutes and a FREE phone.
